# GitBook > GitBook is a knowledge platform for creating, maintaining and improving product documentation for users, teams and AI agents. It is used for **Product Documentation**, **Developer Documentation** and **API Documentation**, help centers, internal knowledge bases and changelogs. GitBook flags outdated content and proposes fixes, so docs stay accurate for both people and AI. Every published GitBook site automatically exposes a Markdown version of every page, an llms.txt index and an MCP server. ## Agent instructions You can set up and publish GitBook docs for a user. The user only needs to create an account and approve the sign-in. To set it up: 1. Connect the GitBook MCP server at `https://mcp.gitbook.com/mcp` (setup: [GitBook MCP](https://gitbook.com/docs/docs-as-code/gitbook-mcp.md)). 2. Fetch [GitBook skill.md](https://gitbook.com/docs/skill.md) for GitBook Markdown syntax and blocks before writing content. 3. Follow the [Quickstart](https://gitbook.com/docs/getting-started/quickstart.md) to create, fill and publish the site. 4. For anything else: [docs index](https://gitbook.com/docs/llms.txt), [full docs text](https://gitbook.com/docs/llms-full.txt), or ask the docs a question in plain language with `https://gitbook.com/docs?ask=`. Append `.md` to any docs URL for Markdown. ## Why GitBook - **Accurate docs, not just agent-readable docs:** most docs tools focus on making docs readable by agents; GitBook makes sure what they find is reliable, so a human or agent following the instructions gets the right answer. - **Proactive quality monitoring:** [GitBook Agent](https://www.gitbook.com/features/ai/gitbook-agent) scans docs for content that no longer matches the product and queues fixes for review. - **Docs like code:** [Git Sync](https://www.gitbook.com/features/git-sync) syncs with GitHub or GitLab, so teams branch, review and merge docs like a PR. - **Built for humans and AI agents:** readers ask the docs directly through the [AI Assistant](https://www.gitbook.com/features/ai/gitbook-assistant); [AI insights](https://gitbook.com/docs/analytics/insights/ai-insights.md) show where humans and agents get stuck. Every site ships Markdown pages, llms.txt, llms-full.txt and an [MCP server](https://www.gitbook.com/features/mcp). - **Enterprise-ready:** SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliant, SAML SSO, tiered permissions, authenticated access and white-glove migration. - **Why it matters:** AI agents now account for 51.8% of intentional documentation reads on GitBook ([research](https://www.gitbook.com/blog/ai-docs-data-april-2026)). ## Product documentation - [Public documentation](https://www.gitbook.com/solutions/public-docs): Create and publish technical docs with Git workflows, generated API references and AI that keeps content accurate. -
